Leah Messer has revealed the cause of daughter Alianna's health problems. The Teen Mom 2 star told In Touch Weekly that her four-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with a rare form of muscular dystrophy.
"We were scared because we didn't know what her future was going to look like, but we always pushed for answers," Leah Messer said about Ali's diagnosis. "We never gave up, and we never will. We'll do everything we can to make sure Ali has the life that she needs."
Unlike her twin sister Aleeah, Alianna has dealt with development delays throughout her life. Leah Messer spent the early seasons of Teen Mom 2 taking her daughter to various doctors with the hopes of getting a diagnosis. Messer confirmed the muscular dystrophy rumors in Tuesday's season premiere of the MTV series.
So what is muscular dystrophy? According to the Mayo Clinic, the illness is a genetic disease of the muscles that cause them to become weaker over time. Other possible symptoms include difficulty breathing or swallowing and the disfigurement of limbs. There is no known cure, but therapies and medicines can help slow down the progress of the illness.
Sadly, Ali's diagnosis means that Leah Messer's daughter will only get worse over time. The Teen Mom 2 star told In Touch that the toddler will eventually need a wheelchair. Messer and her new husband, Jeremy Calvert, even plan to move into a more wheelchair-accessible home.
"The disorder affects her respiratory system and progresses the older she gets," Leah Messer continued about Ali's diagnosis. "The bigger she gets and the more weight she gains, the harder it'll be for her muscles to carry the weight."
Hopefully, Leah Messer will continue to have Calvert's support as she deals with Ali's devastating diagnosis. Calvert is not the twins' father, but he has helped raise the girls after marrying the teen mom in 2012. Messer previously married Corey Simms, the father of Ali and Aleeah, but the two eventually divorced.

Rumors of a second Messer divorce cropped up when a Teen Mom 2 trailer showed her and Calvert discussing a possible split. But Messer claimed this speculation was overblown.
"When that [divorce scene] came on in the trailer I laughed, we laughed, because we're like, 'Really?! We're not divorcing,'" Leah Messer told WetPaint. "Jeremy and I were talking about each other, but it wasn't real. He really said that, but he says that all the time. And I thought it was serious this time."
Messer continued: "He struggles with giving work attention and also giving his family attention while he's away. I just wanted to talk to him and there would three or four days I would go without talking to my husband. I would get upset, and it would cause us problems, and he'd say, 'Well, whatever, then I want a divorce.' He throws out the word all the time, but we never end up getting a divorce. "
