Singing sensation Lorde recently sat down with fashion prodigy Tavi Gevinson to talk about Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, and the magical moment when Lorde met David Bowie. The two stars also bonded over the fact that they're both still teenagers, 17, and their disdain for the way the media portrays teenage celebrities and pits them against each other. Lorde also revealed how she wisened up after making comments in the media that were blown out of proportion.
Though the "Royals" singer was huge in 2013, she was just as excited as everyone else when Beyonce released her new album. "It also just feels like the album that I have wanted to hear from Beyoncé for such a long time, and I'm so happy that it has happened. I liked what you guys said about her not being afraid to let her feminism evolve, and you can hear that in this record, which I think is so important and such a hard thing to bare. It feels really personal."
The singing sensation says she learned the hard way that journalists were going to try to get juicy quotes from her. They ask her what she thinks of certain artists, Lorde said, and sort of nudge her into an answer that could be seen as controversial. Now when someone asks her what she thinks of Cyrus she'll say: "What do you think of Miley?"
The singer told Gevinson that reporters then grasp for an answer, kind of stumbling onto: "Well, I think she's really talented. "And I'm like, 'there you go," Lorde said.
Lorde also says she's amazed by Taylor Swift. "She is so good as a performer. I don't think people realize how difficult a stadium is to perform in. You have to change how you move and how you talk to accommodate that scale, and she is SO good at that. It feels natural when she does it. I'm so in awe of her ability, it's insane." Despite rumors of a feud, Lorde and Taylor are actually close friends in real life, and Lorde recently attended Swift's birthday party.
On meeting her musical icon, David Bowie, Lorde was still in awe. "I was like, I could creatively die and just be happy forever. I never tell anyone about that experience, because it meant so much to me, and I feel like it would be dulled or something if I always talked about it in magazines or whatever. It was super cute, though — for some reason we were holding hands and just staring into each other's eyes and talking, and I was like, This is David Bowie's hand, what am I doing? It was insane. A beautiful moment."
Overall Lorde comes across as intelligent, sweet, and down-to-earth. The big takeaway from this interview is that Lorde has definitely been misunderstood in certain interviews. After reading this delightful interview, we can't imagine she would ever really feud with another performer.
