A remake of Gilligan's Island is officially in the works, but with a modern-day twist and cast. How modern? Well, Jennifer Lawrence and Beyoncé are being named as possible candidates to play the show's famous redheaded bombshell, Tina Louise's character, Ginger.
Warner Bros is talking about creating a film based on the TV series with Book Of Mormon's Josh Gad as one of its writers. Along with Gad, Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez will co-write with the comedic star as well. Although it has not been announced who Gad will play in the famous 1960s castaway crew, there are supposed rumors that Gad could play The Skipper, the crew's captain.
But who will be cast to play the sexy castaway Ginger? Neither Louise nor her daughter Caprice Crane are involved with the new rendition of the famous mid-20th century comedic TV show, but Crane has been open about suggestions for the reboot. She is said she is hoping to add a much more modern feeling to the outdated show, so that way more people and families can relate to the remake more.
"My mom was constantly coming on to the Professor on the show, and he was never into it," Crane told Today. The Professor, who was played by Roy Hinkley, was always an oblivious gentleman toward the two beautiful women, who were constantly flirting with him on the abandoned island. So making him gay in the revised film version of the show wouldn't be a huge stretch. "So the Professor could be the gay one. It would explain a lot. It would be fun if they shake it up, make it worthy of today's times."
Although Crane, who is a writer in L.A., was born after the famous TV show had already ended, she understands what the Ginger actress must portray and be like to be able to take on a character such as Ginger. She must be beautiful, sexy and powerful.
"They're going to have their work cut out for them finding someone who is as awesome and gorgeous and funny as my mom," Crane said. "I'm in love with Jennifer Lawrence. She's so fresh and charming and I love her ideas. The last go-around when this was being discussed, Beyoncé was suggested — and I think that would be a good idea. But Christina Hendricks is the obvious physical choice."
Although talk about possibly doing a Gilligan's Island reboot comes up every couple of years, Crane thinks that this time it will actually happen. "I hope they get to do what they want," Crane said. "Part of me thinks I don't know why everybody has to remake everything, but part of me thinks it's great, give it a fresh twist and make it fantastic."
