What do an Obama selfie, a fake sign-language interpreter and a black Santa Claus all have in common? They were all a part of SNL's most hilarious skits this weekend! This week's current events, particularly Nelson Mandela's funeral and memorial service, gave us more than enough crazy, stranger-than-fiction moments to keep Saturday Night Live busy, and boy did they deliver! Featuring every comical moment of the week from President Obama's selfie with the blond Danish prime minister, to the crazy fake sign language interpreter, to the Fox News Megyn Kelly "Santa is White" controversy, no international social faux pas was safe from the comedic grasp of SNL's skits.
Opening the SNL episode with a cold skit, we see President Obama come on stage to address the press. Beginning his presentation with an indication that the conference would be about the Health Care website, the subject quickly shifted to the events transpiring at the Nelson Mandela memorial service — selfie and all.
"I'd like to address some of the controversy I encountered at the memorial service of Nelson Mandela," said President Obama in the SNL skit.
"I felt like Lemony Snickett ... because I experienced a series of unfortunate events."
The president then goes on to name some of the many incidents the media took hold of this week, including the selfie, fake interpreter and a handshake with Raul Castro.
"First, I got roped into taking a selfie, with the blond female Danish prime minister. Some people said Michelle was angry at me for that. But I talked to her afterwards, and I can assure you, she was furious!"
"Then, I got caught shaking hands with Raul Castro," said the SNL skit president. "In my defense, he told me he was Edward James Omos."
"And finally, there was a sign language interpreter, who clearly had no idea what he was doing."
Soon after uttering these words, a new person arrives on the scene of the SNL skit, and we know it's about to get real. Sporting a shaved head, we see Kenan playing the supposedly schizophrenic fake signer from Mandela's memorial, flapping his arms and making ridiculous signs as President Obama attempts to give an update on the health care website. Once he realizes the fake signer was attempting to interpret his press conference, President Obama has the man hauled off by the secret service, only to be interrupted again by Germany's Merkel, who insists on getting a selfie with President Obama now that the Danish Prime Minister has had one.
The SNL skit is hilarious and spot on as usual. Just what the doctor ordered after a bizarre series of events unfolded at the Nelson Mandela memorial this week. Check out the video here along with some reactions from viewers on Twitter.
