Controversial Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly infuriated a lot of people on her Fox News show, Kelly Files, by saying that Santa has to be white. Now many are wondering if Kelly's comment could be considered racially insensitive. She was responding to a story on Slate titled "Santa Claus Should Not Be A White Man Anymore," in which Aisha Harris calls for a more diversity-friendly image of Santa so that children of all races can feel represented, or she suggests that we get rid of Santa as a person and turn him into a penguin instead.

Megyn Kelly wasn't having it though, "Oh, this is ridiculous. Yet another person claiming it's racist to have a white Santa." She says of the segment, "By the way, for all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white but this person is just arguing that maybe we should also have a black Sant."

Kelly seemed to feel a little bit of sympathy for non-white children who wanted a different Santa, and went on to acknowledge that in the piece Harris talks about her childhood and how it was painful for her to see Santa only portrayed as a white man. "Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn't mean it has to change," Kelly added. Of course, some might argue that just because the idea of a diversified Santa makes Kelly uncomfortable, that doesn't mean our current version of Santa has to stay the same.

"Jesus was a white man, too," Kelly continued to put her foot in her mouth, "He was a historical figure. That's a verifiable fact — as is Santa. I just want the kids watching to know that. My point is, how do you just revise it in the middle of the legacy of the story and change Santa from white to black?" Scientific evidence suggests that Jesus probably wasn't white, and we hope we don't have to be the ones to break this to her, but Santa isn't real — so children can interpret him however they want, even as a penguin.

It seems strange that Kelly, who told the Huffington Post earlier this year that she is "moderate and reasonable," claims to realize that the current portrait of Santa is hurtful to kids who don't share his skin tone, yet she still insists that we do nothing to change that to make those kids feel included. Santa is for children, not for middle-aged Fox News anchors, so maybe we should think about what would make them happy?
