Katy Perry's breakup really snuffed out her fireworks. In a new interview with Marie Claire, Perry revealed that after Russell Brand asked her for a divorce via text message, the singer turned to alcohol and Cheetos to try to cope. "There were two weeks of my life after I found out the truth of my marriage where I was like, 'OK. All right. I can't feel this. This is too intense right now,'" Perry confessed to the magazine. "I was, like, just eating Flamin' Hot Cheetos and drinking, and that's it."
Those surrounding Perry quickly realized what the singer was going through. "I think she felt so kicked in the head and so publicly embarrassed at being divorced by a text message," Perry's producing partner Greg Wells said. "She was at a huge low and was thinking about not leaving the bathroom forever."
We can't imagine what it must have felt like for the "Unconditionally" singer to have her 14-month marriage to Russell Brand end via text. Perry has admitted to having suicidal thoughts following her divorce, but these days the singer is doing just fine. Perry is now dating John Mayer, has recently released her latest album Prism, and has become much more optimistic about life.
"There are two ways you can go: You can either nurture yourself or go destructive. I have gone down the destructive path before, and that didn't work for me," Perry said. "You dig deep beyond those scars and find that soft tissue again, and you massage and nurture it and bring it to life, little by little, through serving yourself well. I did it through hikes and vitamins and therapy and prayer and good friends." It looks like Perry is totally over the ex-husband who so cruelly dumped her via text message, and has come out of the divorce with a healthier, happier outlook on life.
Sending a text message to break up with someone is a pretty heartless move, but is it shocking? Surprisingly, Perry isn't the only star to get dumped on the phone. Here are five celebrities who were dumped via text or over the phone!
1. Taylor Swift
In 2008 Taylor Swift told Ellen Degeneres that her most recent boyfriend, Joe Jonas, broke up with her over a 27-second phone call! "It's all right — I'm cool. You know what, it's like, when I find that person that is right for me, he'll be wonderful. When I look at that person, I'm not even going to remember the boy who broke up with me over the phone in 25 seconds when I was 18." Check out this clip of Swift on The Ellen Show talking about her phone breakup.
2. Kevin Federline
Britney's ex-hubby Kevin Federline reportedly learned that his pop-star wife was filing for divorce through a text message. In a sad twist, Federline was actually taping a reality TV show when he read the text from his wife telling him that after two years of marriage, she wanted a divorce. Federline then became visibly upset, ripped off his mic and disappeared, much to the shock of everyone filming.
3. Carrie Underwood
In 2008 Carrie Underwood told Extra that Gossip Girl alum Chace Crawford split with her via text message, "We broke up over text so ... it's like, 'peace out.'" Though she doesn't seem too bitter about it, "It just didn't work," she said. "We both knew it didn't work and [had] no hard feelings at all whatsoever."
4. Jessica Simpson
In 2008, VH1 claimed that Adam Levine dumped Jessica Simpson with a text that read, "Really busy. Need Space." Simpson and Levine have never confirmed the story but if it is true, it seems even more cruel because it had been reported at the time that Nick Lachey and Simpson divorced in part because of Levine. Simpson had been rumored to be hooking up with him, and Lachey has admitted that he always had his suspicions about whether or not the rumors were true.
5. Jennifer Aniston
In 2009 it was rumored that John Mayer broke up with Jennifer Aniston with a text message. Staying tight-lipped about the breakup, Aniston never confirmed or denied the reports, but Mayer later admitted that technology did get in the way of their relationship. "Here was a rumor that I had been dumped because I was tweeting too much. That wasn't it, but that was a big difference. The brunt of her success came before TMZ and Twitter. I think she's still hoping it goes back to 1998." Mayer revealed about his relationship with Aniston in an interview with Playboy.
