Who rocked the AMA red carpet and who fell flat? Studio 54 styles were everywhere this year. And it was hard to decide where to look first: Lady Gaga's lavender Versace look, Nicole Richie's white-hot Emilio Pucci dress or Taylor Swift's gilded Julien Macdonald mini.
Snagging four awards, Swift definitely claimed this year's AMAs as her night. But Rihanna was a close second in her racy bustier!
Take a look at the best, worst and confusing styles at this year's American Music Awards.
1. Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift looked sultry in a very short, very sequined Julien Macdonald mini complete with a nude mesh cutout over the decolletage. When it came to makeup Swift decided to ditch her signature red lipstick, instead going with a more toned-down lip paired with an overall bronzed look. Her hair was beautifully tousled with long full bangs, and the star looked leggier than ever. When asked what she does to stay in shape, Swift admitted that she doesn't take the traditional route of hitting the gym: "I do things that don't feel like working out ... dancing, hiking." Really? We're jealous!
2. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga arrived on the red carpet on a white horse as an ode to '70s icon Bianca Jagger, who famously rode a horse into Studio 54. Gaga looked radiant in a chiffon Versace gown accessorized with a Medusa body chain and lilac platforms. The ARTPOP superstar opened up about Donatella Versace on the red carpet, saying: "She is family to me, She's always been so supportive." She then gushed, "I'm just a girl who made outfits out of trash...and now I'm working with Versace...She's like my long-lost other mother." Before taking her seat, Gaga changed into a strapless vintage Versace gown fully embellished with Swarovski crystals with full-length zippers down the front and back. For her Monica Lewinsky parody later, Gaga started in a custom Atelier Versace Swarovski crystal structured jacket and a matching pleated skirt. She then removed both to reveal a custom Atelier Versace bodysuit fully embroidered with Swarovski crystals and silver chainmail details. Can you say IMPACT?
3. Nicole Richie
Nicole Richie channeled the '70s in a softer way in a white-hot Emilio Pucci silk gown with side cutouts from the Spring 2014 collection. We loved her gold chunky vintage YSL necklace and earrings, which were large enough to stand out, but not too big to overpower the petite star.
Following a long list of female celebs who have recently chopped their locks, Ciara debuted a sexy new bob on the AMAs red carpet. Her outfit of choice? A J. Mendel Spring 2014 noir graphic lace embroidered gown, one of the riskier outfits of the night, leaving little to the imagination.
5. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson took a risk in a vibrant asymmetrical Dior dress, which garnered mixed reviews. We loved the color, and Hudson's hair and makeup were spot-on. But the skirt was slightly ill-fitting, prompting fashion insiders to question the choice.
6. Zendaya Coleman
Zendaya Coleman wowed in a white Donna Karan Resort 2014 dress topped off with an assortment of John Hardy jewelry. We love that the Dancing With The Stars alum didn't have to show a lot of skin to look sexy. And we think the outfit paired well with her long, sleek locks.
Ke$ha showed up on the red carpet with two-toned pastel hair and a Michael Costello one-shoulder dress. Between the muted makeup and dark dress, the always-controversial singer looked a bit washed out. Though we applaud the fact that she takes risks, we wish this look made a bit more sense.
8. Kelly Osbourne
Hitting the carpet in a gray lace Rami Al Ali dress, Kelly Osbourne definitely disappointed this time around. Between the purple hair and princess-like frock, the petite star was totally swallowed up. Osbourne later tweeted: ":( my dress did not photograph anywhere near as good as it looked in real life!"
9. Emma Roberts
Emma Roberts' Lanvin liquid lamé strapless gown was a bold choice, but the pewter hue did wash out her pale complexion. There was also a lot of volume for the petite star. But the fuchsia accents did add a fun sense of whimsy.
10. Miley Cyrus
Looking more covered up than usual, but notably without a shirt, Miley Cyrus didn't wow us in her Versus Versace suit, Saint Laurent shoes, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. It was refreshing to see Cyrus not trying desperately to push the envelope, but this just seemed a bit boring. Certainly there must be a middle ground between this and the cat bikini she wore later on stage?
11. Naya Rivera
Naya Rivera showed a lot of skin in her Michael Kors cutout gown, but we have to admit the Glee star kind of rocked the sinfully sexy look!
Rihanna received the first ever Icon Award and also took home the award for Best Soul R&B Artist. Wearing a sparkly black sequin bra top and a high-waisted see-through lace skirt to accept an award, Rihanna was racy as usual. Her slicked-back hair was a bit perplexing, but the Twitterverse later filled us in that this hair style is typically worn at night to keep relaxed hair neat while sleeping.
13. Katy Perry
Before opening the show, Katy Perry hit the red carpet looking gorgeous in a black polka-dot tulle Oscar de la Renta gown. The strapless dress was adorned with appliqué flowers adding a touch of color. Perry completed the look with a cute Olympia Le-Tan "Webster's New World Handy Pocket Dictionary" box clutch. Perry gushed on the red carpet: "I just love the flirtiness of it ... the punk rock of it."
14. Heidi Klum
Supermodel and Project Runway judge Heidi Klum opted for a Marchesa dress complete with lace, ruffles, and fringe at this years AMAs. The look isn't our favorite of the night, but it's hard to hate because Klum looks amazing in pretty much everything she puts on.
15. Kendall and Kyle Jenner
Looking almost exactly like big sister Kim, Kendall Jenner took to the AMA red carpet in a white Keepsake skirt and top paired with a beautiful Dylanex bib necklace. When speaking with E! News she addressed rumors of her romantic relationship with Harry Styles. "We're friends" she said, smiling. "It's very hard to have friends of the opposite sex, you're dating everyone in L.A" according to the press. Little sister Kylie, 16 wore a more conservative outfit, a white Maiyet top and black Giambatista Valli pants.
16. Christina Aguilera
Looking a little bit like Marilyn Monroe in a slinky white Maria Lucia Hohan cutout dress with red lips and curly blond hair, Christina Aguilera wowed crowds once again with her super-slim figure. Aguilera, who later performed "Say Something," took a risk. But in this case the choice definitely paid off.
17. Jordin Sparks
Jordin Sparks channeled her inner gladiator in a studded Jovani gown and sparkly cage heels. The Season 6 winner of American Idol opened up about working with Whitney Houston in the movie Sparkle, saying: "I was so nervous the first day, but she was so cool. As soon as she walked into the room and I was in her presence it was amazing. She was so special, there's no one else like her. There's only one voice like that."
18. Zoe Saldana
We normally love Zoe Saldana. But this Roland Mouret dress wasn't our favorite look. The busy print felt like it was a bit too much on the ultra-slim stunner.
19. Daisy Fuentes
It's hard to believe that Daisy Fuentes is 47! She looked fantastic on the AMA red carpet wearing a beaded bodice gown with a sheer back and a neoprene skirt from Tadashi Shoji's Fall 2013 collection.
20. Alicia Silverstone
The combination of this Nicole Miller cocktail dress and too long tresses make Alicia Silverstone look like she stepped out for a last-minute dinner date, not the American Music Awards. We think a haircut would look refreshing on the star, and she could lose a few of her stacked bracelets for a more modern look.
