Younger fans of Sons of Anarchy, get ready to have your minds blown. Before Katey Sagal played Gemma Teller, one of the toughest, meanest, baddest, and most complicated women on television, she played giant-haired redhead housewife Peg Bundy on the crass family comedy Married With Children.
2. Katey Sagal has toured with Bob Dylan
An accomplished singer-songwriter, Katey Sagal is about to release her third album! Covered will feature songs that have inspired her in her life, and her voice will sound familiar to any Sons of Anarchy fans. On top of playing Gemma Teller on the FX drama, Sagal has contributed a handful of song's to the show's soundtrack. "Every season I sing at least one song in the soundtrack," Sagal revealed to E!, noting that she's been playing gigs around town — and has gotten a great response. "It's not what I thought would happen, but it's kind of like everything in my life. ... I just have to keep getting out of the way, and stuff just happens."
3. Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter is Katey Sagal's husband
It's no wonder Sagal is so devoted to her role as Gemma Teller on Sons of Anarchy: Creator Kurt Sutter is her husband! The two have poured blood, sweat and tears into the gritty biker drama, both playing pivotal roles -- Sutter played jailed biker Otto Delaney for six seasons, during which he was blinded, beaten, blackmailed, raped, and shot — and Sagal makes it clear how devoted they are to the show. "I believe that as violent as the show tends to be, and gritty as it tends to be, it's also got a lot of heart."
4. Katey Sagal voiced Leela on Futurama
In 1999, Sagal took on the role of the purple-haired, Cyclops-esque spaceship captain Leela in the animated science fiction comedy Futurama. Sagal wanted the role as soon as creator Matt Groening asked her to audition, though she was one of the only primarily live-action actors to be cast in the animated series. "This is acting, but a different type of acting," Sagal said. "You're not using your whole tool here — your body and physicality — but it's challenging that way. The animation work is really unusual."
