Ah, the power of Adobe Photoshop. A new Photoshop video and .gif set reveal the incredible artificial transformation of a blonde model in a string bikini bottom. First the woman is shown posing on her stomach, topless, without makeup and without her hair done. In a brief flurry of activity, sped up to last only a few seconds, stylists curl the woman's hair and apply makeup to her face.
But the Photoshop video's shocking content is in the digital makeover that follows. First, a Photoshop artist smooths out the contours and shadows of the model's face, particularly the faint natural shadows on either side of her nose. Then the artist digitally deepens the color of the model's lips, shrinks her nose, and adjusts her nostrils.
The Photoshop model video gets even more surprising when the artist's cursor moves to the model's eyes, which are stretched and expanded, the irises lightened, and the eyebrows lifted.
But the model's body gets the most shocking Photoshop makeover in the video and gifs. Not an inch of the model's skin goes untouched under the artist's tools. Her shoulder is stretched and slimmed down. Her arms and torso are significantly shaved down. Her thighs are shaved down, too, and then stretched and lengthened — same for her calves, feet, hands, and neck. Her head is lifted, her cheekbones whittled down, and finally, her skin and hair is lightened from head to toe.

"Honestly, it doesn't really seem to matter what the model looks like to begin with," writes Jezebel's Isha Aran, holding up the Photoshop model video and .gifs as proof of the fact that magazine and photo models have become as visually abstracted as comic book characters. It's hard to deny the resemblance between the Photoshop model video and behind-the-scenes footage from animation studies, where live models would provide the poses for illustrators to translate into cartoons.
The difference, of course, is that the model post-Photoshop is not a cartoon — and without the Photoshop before and after, most viewers would never stop to think about how her face and body have been stretched and warped to achieve her final appearance.
A top-voted comment on the YouTube video sums up a popular reaction to the Photoshop model video. "That, my friends, is society trying to hold you to an unachievable standard of beauty," writes Daniel S. "It is literally impossible to look like that: both anatomically and appearance-wise. The only way to you can look like the edited garbage is by completely rearranging your bone and skeletal structure."
