Julianne Hough's Halloween costume is raising eyebrows online, with some calling the outfit racist and offensive. The actress and two-time Dancing With The Stars champion wore blackface in a tribute to the character Crazy Eyes from the Netflix series Orange Is The New Black. The character is played by black actress Uzo Aduba.
Julianne Hough's Halloween costume also included Crazy Eyes' signature knotted hair style and a prison nametag. However, as People magazine noted, the costume was not entirely accurate, since characters on Orange Is The New Black wear beige rather than orange prison outfits. The 25-year-old star wore the controversial Halloween costume at Casamigos Tequila party in Hollywood. Her friends were also dressed in Orange Is The New Black prison garb, though Hough was the only one in blackface.
Unsurprisingly, many on Twitter were outraged at Julianne Hough's blackface costume. "No, Julianne Hough," wrote @danie_bagel. "Just NO. I can't believe 'blackface is not okay' is a conversation we still need to have."
Added @lawblob: "Julianne Hough is gonna need something stronger than Proactiv to clean up her blackface decision."
Julianne Hough would have been better off wearing a less controversial Halloween costume. Snooki, for instance, dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard Of Oz. Her fiancé, Jionni LaValle, joined her as the Scarecrow, while their young son Lorenzo was the Cowardly Lion. Many other stars chose Wonder Woman as their costume this year, including Jenny McCarthy, Joanna Krupa, and Melissa Gorga.
The blackface Halloween costume isn't the only reason Julianne Hough is making headlines these days. The actress recently guest judged on an episode of Dancing With The Stars, where she made some disparaging comments about fellow dancer Mark Ballas, her former professional partner.
"There were moments where I felt like choreography-wise, I felt like it was two people dancing side-by-side rather than together," she told Ballas, who was partnered with singer Christina Milian. "So I really want to see [Milian] shine. I've danced with Mark. You have to stand in front to make sure you're seen."

Hough later insisted that she did not mean to offend her friend. "I loved being on the show again and being a judge because I feel like that's where it all started for me, and it's where I'm really comfortable being able to talk and critique," she told Us Weekly. "I judge the same way I teach so it all comes from love. It's not to diss anybody. It's not to hurt anybody's feelings. It's about constructive criticism so that they can get better for next week, and that was not a direct attack to anybody."
