Lil Mama starred in the TLC movie as Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, who was tragically killed in a car accident in 2002. Keke Palmer played Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas and Drew Sidora played Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins. Thomas and Watkins also served as executive producers for the film.

"Can we just say that we were on this project from the rootie-to-the-tootie-to-the-bootie!" T-Boz said. "From the script, finding writers, picking writers. VH1 was so amazing letting us collaborate with them and it was a joint effort. We were in auditions, we put on dance clothes, we was up there dancing with each girl."

Despite Chilli and T-Boz's involvement, many criticized the casting choices when they were first announced. But Sidora told Vibe that she would not let the negative feedback bother her.

"But it motivated me and gave me the challenge to really channel her and go deeper and know, okay this is T-Boz, but who is Tionne Watkins and what can I do to help her story live on and be an inspiration for anybody watching?" Sidora said. "When I first tested for the role, I tested with Lil Mama, and when I walked in, I was so taken aback because she looked just like [Left-Eye]. And then her spirit was all over. I just knew she had it."

Lil Mama had the task of recreating some of the most dramatic moments of Lisa Lopes' life. This included the rapper's difficult relationship with her father, Ronald, who died shortly before Lopes became a superstar.

"Her dad was an entertainer, too, but didn't quite make it, so I think he came across as strict because he wanted Lisa to have a backup plan," Lil Mama said. "That made Lisa want to prove herself to her dad. I know she wished her dad could have seen how successful she eventually became."

The TLC movie also highlighted Lisa Lopes' tumultuous life with her boyfriend, Andre Rison. Lopes famously burned down the NFL star's house in 1994 when trying to destroy his shoes. Still, the two stayed together for several more years, even briefly getting engaged in 2001.

But Chilli and T-Boz had plenty of drama of their own in the TLC movie. Chilli, for instance, had an abortion after getting pregnant by producer Dallas Austin.
