The magazine reported that the 51-year-old is now living a quiet life in Manhattan with 8-year-old daughter, Daisy, and boyfriend, John Mellencamp. Ryan has acted in the series Web Therapy but has not appeared on the big screen since starring in Serious Moonlight in 2009. But in the 1990s, she starred in classic romantic comedies like Sleepless In Seattle, When Harry Met Sally... and You've Got Mail.

"[New York] makes you different," her friend, Delia Ephron, told PEOPLE. "Los Angeles is just about movies. New York is about so much more than that, and so is Meg."
But some are wondering if Ryan's semi-retirement was really a conscious choice. Commenters on the PEOPLE article argue that Meg Ryan's plastic surgery led directors to shun her.
"I always liked her,she was a real cutie," wrote a poster named Billy. "I think her botched surgery that ruined her fabulous looks had a lot to do with her leaving. She was way too good looking to have surgery, so sad."
"I assumed she stopped making films because she became too old in the eyes of movie producers, and that the sickening plastic surgery she had has rendered her looking somewhat ridiculous," added Julie Helton.
But random Internet posters are not the only people who feel this way. Actress Jane Leeves, who is just a year older than Ryan, told Daily Mail that the '90s star is just one of many in Hollywood whose career was derailed by cosmetic surgery.
"I don't blame people for going under the knife," Leeves said. "If someone is known as a beauty and a sex symbol, they are under a lot of pressure to keep looking good. But it rarely turns out well. Plastic surgery can age people terribly — it always makes you look older in the end and can ruin careers. Meg Ryan destroyed her career with plastic surgery."

Others are wondering if Meg Ryan's alleged affair with Russell Crowe hurt her career. In 2000, the actress supposedly cheated on her-then husband, Dennis Quaid, with her Proof of Life co-star. Ryan and Quaid filed for divorce that same year.
"Probably after the Russell Crowe incident she's probably a little embarrassed to be in the limelight any longer not to mention killing her marriage a la Tiger Woods in the process," PEOPLE reader Rotate commented under the Meg Ryan article. "Oh well, selling apples on street corners isn't so bad."
Meg Ryan, for her part, later claimed that Dennis Quaid actually cheated on her. Quaid lashed out at Ryan following this remark.
"It was eight years ago, and I find it unbelievable that Meg continues publicly to rehash and rewrite the story of our relationship," the actor told New York Daily News in 2008. "Also, I find it regrettable that our son, Jack, has to be reminded in a public way of the turmoil and pain that every child feels in a divorce."
