Kerry Washington debuted her singing skills in a duet with Jordin Sparks, and the actress' rendition of Disney's "A Whole New World" proved the potential for a music career.
Washington was prompted to sing "A Whole New World" at the Teen Choice Awards during a backstage interview with Sparks, an American Idol winner. Washington and Sparks' impromptu duet was preluded by the Grammy nominated-singer's karaoke questioning. "What's your go-to karaoke song?" Sparks asked Washington, garnering a surprising response.
"You know, I gotta say it's really corny, it's like any Disney song," Washington said. Sparks quickly sensed an opportunity to capture Washington's music talents on camera, and asked the actress to indulge in a duet. "Sing with you? You're like the singer!" Washington said, remaining coy about her secret singing talent. The pair quickly decided on "A Whole New World" from Aladdin, and Sparks took the pressure off by singing the first verse.
When Washington chimed in, delivering a pitch-perfect note, Sparks was clearly impressed. "Yes, girl! Do you hear this!" the Idol star gushed. Washington was equally excited by the on-air karaoke session, declaring her disbelief over the duet. "Oh my god I just sang with Jordin Sparks!" Washington said. Sensing a connection, Washington and Sparks made a pact to perform together in the future, before the actress headed into the star-studded event.
Washington's impressive singing abilities aren't the only thing the Scandal star has been hiding from fans. The Emmy Award-nominated actress recently revealed that she secretly wed NFL player Nnamdi Asomugha in June, but kept the huge wedding news out of public eyes. "I think it's fantastic in the fact that she kept it quiet," Washington's Django Unchained co-star, Jamie Foxx, said. "In our business it's tough when it's so bright and so shiny, but being able to have a wonderful relationship under wraps really makes you happy for her," Foxx explained.
Washington may be willing to reveal her singing chops, but she intends to keep her personal life and marriage to Asomugha out of the spotlight. "I don't talk about my personal life in the press, but I will say I'm really happy," Washington coyly replied when asked about the nuptials. "I'm blessed in all areas of my life."
