Josh Marks, the MasterChef Season 3 finalist who was arrested on Monday, is currently being evaluated for mental illness. Sources close to the 7'2" contestant believe he may be suffering from bipolar disorder. UPDATE: Josh Marks reportedly confirmed that he is bipolar in a video for the Make a Sound Project earlier this year.
"We are working closely with medical professionals to determine if Josh's behavior could be related to mental health symptoms," said Lisa Marie Butler, Josh Marks' attorney. "The Josh that you are hearing about in police reports this morning is not the spirited Gentle Giant that we know."
A similar message was also posted on Josh Marks' Facebook page.
At least one other MasterChef contestant also thinks Josh Marks could have a mental disorder. Tali Clavijo made the top 18 on Season 3, the same year that Marks finished as the runner-up.
"Josh was two different people," Clavijo said. " ... He seemed to always be a party guy, but he had this other side trying to be good. He had split personalities."
Josh Marks was arrested on Monday after getting into a confrontation with police officers at the University of Chicago. A cop spotted the reality star trying to use a campus phone with cuts on his face. When the officer approached Marks, he allegedly punched the policeman and tried to take his gun. He then fled to a neighboring yard, where five cops ultimately subdued him.
The arrest got even more bizarre once Josh Marks went to the hospital. There, the finalist apparently blamed everything on Chef Gordon Ramsay, one of the judges on MasterChef. Marks supposedly called Ramsay an "a**hole" and accused the chef of possessing his body and turning him into God. No drugs were found in Marks' system, lending credence to the mental illness theory.
Josh Marks has been charged with aggravated battery on a peace officer and attempting to disarm a peace officer. He could face up to 14 years in jail if convicted on these two felonies.
Marks quickly became a fan favorite on Season 3 of MasterChef. He was originally eliminated on an egg-based challenge but later won his way back into the competition. He then made it all the way to the final two, losing to Christine Ha.
