An Arrested Development Season 5 release on Netflix was officially confirmed this week by its creator Mitch Hurwitz. Though it has been rumored for several weeks now that a Season 5 of the hit series Arrested Development would be making its way to Netflix sometime next year, up to this point, no definitive statement had been made.
That all changed this week, however, when the show's creator, Mitch Hurwitz, shared a few spoilers about the upcoming season at the Just For Laughs comedy festival. When asked at the Arrested Development panel if Season 5 was in the works, Hurwitz gave the one word answer we've all been waiting for.
Will Arrested Development come back to Netflix for a Season 5? Hurwitz's answer: "Definitely."
A few seconds later he added this additional confirmation about the upcoming season: "I don't want to get into a whole negotiation right now... but I've got a family to feed."
Although the creator of Arrested Development is not sure in which manner he will present the upcoming season 5 debut, there is no question that it's coming, and Netflix will be the one to host it. Here are a few more juicy tidbits and spoilers Hurwitz offered concerning his plans for an Arrested Development Season 5.
"I keep thinking about it, and why don't we do the movie version of this and then do the series, because this series kinda peaks with the story ... I kinda go back and forth between that and a series. But here's the most important thing, whatever we do, I want to get the cast all together and not do another anthology thing, and that's why I keep thinking about kicking off with a special or a three-part show and then going into a series."
Of course for all us avid Arrested Development fans, any of these options sound amazing, as long as we keep getting our regular injection of Bluth Family dysfunction. It seems the chief content officer at Netflix, Ted Sarandos, felt the same, because when Hurwitz asked if he was game, Sarandos answered emphatically,
"Absolutely, in any form."
In light of these new Arrested Development Season 5 confirmations, we've put together a list of seven spoilers about the new series. Well, maybe not spoilers so "much as things we should expect to see" when the new season begins. Check them out below, and feel free to add your own predictions to the comments section.
Arrested Development Season 5: What To Expect
Spoiler #1: Kissing Cousin A.K.A Les Cousins Dangereux
OK, so we know it's been a theme since way back n the very first season of Arrested Development: George Michael's taboo and undying crush on his cousin Maebe. Though Maebe has seemed to reciprocate from time to time, it seems something just keeps these two kissing cousins from taking the full plunge. Though we have to admit, they've gotten pretty close! In Arrested Development Season 4, we saw the two even take marriage vows, which surprisingly turned out to be legal and binding. That's something George Michael is storing in his "Maebe, one day she'll be mine" memory book for episodes to come. This reoccurring theme and inside joke about "Les Cousins Dangereux" is surely something we should expect to see resurface again when Arrested Development season 5 debuts.
Spoiler #2 Buster, The Monster
The final episode of Arrested Development Season 4 featured Buster, his odd love triangle with the two Lucilles and his infamous missing limb which first made its debut as an ongoing joke throughout the series when a "loose seal" took Buster's hand from him. The realization that his hand was gone forever leads Buster to declare "I'm a monster!" and has continued to be a part of the show's running themes since. In the final episode of Season 4 we see the army giving Buster a new hand , which is truly a monster — monster-sized, that is. We fully expect this ongoing joke to be a part of Arrested Development Season 5, and so it has earned its place in our spoilers list.
Spoiler #3 Michael Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places
Each season we've seen Michael go through one or two love interests, which turn out to be tragic failures. Though at times Michael has cut things off out of loyalty to his son, in some cases these chicks were just downright strange. Perhaps in Arrested Development Season 5 we'll finally see Michael Bluth find the girl of his dreams but until that time this is one spoiler theme we full expect to see revisited in the upcoming season on Netflix.
Spoiler #4 The Chicken Dance
The Bluth family we know is racked with dysfunctionality, but one of our favorite ways the Bluths fail to support one another is when they all gang up and do the chicken dance, with responsible Michael Bluth often being the object of their ridicule. The chicken dance reappeared during Arrested Development Season 4 and we fully expect to see it resurface when Season 5 begins.
Season #5 Will Tobias Ever Admit He's Been Out Of The Closet For Years?
From as early as Season 1, Episode 1, we all knew Tobias was in the closet — or way out of it. The problem is, Tobias Funke himself has yet to acknowledge it. With one of his more classic moments being when he discovers the Blue Man group and declares "I just blue myself," we all knew this reoccurring theme would be one to last for seasons to come. Tobias grows increasingly less secure or aware of his true identity as the seasons go by, though to those surrounding him the writing has been on the wall for years. Will Tobias ever finally acknowledge he's been out of the closet for years? There's no telling, but you can fully expect when the spoilers for Arrested Development Season 5 start coming, Tobias Funke, actor and analrapst will be part of them.
Spoiler #6 Lindsey's Acceptance Issues
From the very beginning, Lindsey Bluth (or Funke, however you want to think of her) has been wracked with acceptance issues, and though she seems like the stereotypical female with "daddy issues," daddy isn't the only significant person in her life who seems to reject her regularly. From a failed marriage to a mother who constantly reminds her of what a failure she is, Lindsey Bluth searches throughout the seasons for a purpose in life, a cause she can throw herself in to, meanwhile always hoping one day she'll find someone who loves her for who she is. In Season 4 Lindsey thought she had found this one when she met the blind "Herbert" who can't see her but loves her anyway, but that quickly went south. When Arrested Development Season 5 releases, you can be one theme n the spoilers list will be Lindsey Bluth's search for acceptance no matter how low she has to grovel to get it.
Spoiler #7 G.O.B. The Magician
Yes, no season of Arrested Development would be the same without some botched attempts by G.O.B,, the eldest Bluth son, to pull of the ultimate magic trick that will finally put him on top, earn the respect of his peers and make him legitimate in the eyes of his father. In the last season of Arrested Development to air on Netflix exclusively, G.O.B. attempts to pull off one of the most epic tricks of all time, which incidentally is the same one he tried at his father's funeral and throughout the show. The disappearing act. With each new season that arrives G.O.B.'s attempt to pull off an epic magic trick seem to grow larger and more outlandish while ending in larger failures than the last. To be sure as part of an Arrested Development Season 5 spoilers list, G.O.B. and his never-ending magical pursuits will be featured.
When Will Arrested Development Season 5 Debut?
No definitive release date has yet been given for the Arrested Development Season 5, though last we heard it would release exclusively on Netflix in the Summer of 2014. Though this time frame is still a long way off, we're just pleased to know that a Season 5 is in the works, along with a possible Bluth family movie to kick it all off!
