Dylan Redwine has been found dead, and authorities are now certain he was murdered. The remains of the 13-year-old boy last seen in November during a visit with his father have been found in southwest Colorado. A sheriff's spokesman says police are looking for a killer.
The bones of the missing boy were found during a five-day search of Middle Mountain Road, less than 10 miles from his father's home, where he had reportedly disappeared. Dylan Redwine's bones were found in a drainage area, according to the Sheriff's Office, which stated that Redwine had definitely not been killed by wild animals.

"This is an active homicide investigation," La Plata County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dan Bender said. "The information we have is there is no reason for Dylan to go to Middle Mountain and there is no indication he did it on his own." Middle Mountain is located north of Vallecito Lake, within sight of its waters. The search for Dylan Redwine involved an area ranging from 8,000 to 11,000 feet in altitude, including deep canyons and dense forest.
Officials have yet to identify any suspects in the death of Dylan Redwine. When asked if family members have been ruled out, Bender simply repeated, "We have not labeled anyone as a suspect."
During the search of Middle Mountain, search team members found a number of items, including bones, which were confirmed by DNA testing to belong to Dylan Redwine. Not all of the boy's remains were found, a fact noted with gruesome specificity by Dylan's father Mark Redwine. "It's extremely difficult," Mark Redwine told 7NEWS. "Based on the conversation I had with law enforcement yesterday, they've only found two percent — or approximately two percent — of his remains. That means there's 98 percent of my son still strewn about the countryside."
Mark Redwine remarked that he wants to visit the place where Dylan's remains were found so that he can "be close to" his son, but does not know specifically where the body was found. Mark Redwine's home faces Middle Mountain.
The case of Dylan Redwine was considered a possible homicide investigation within 72 hours of his disappearance. Investigators have been pursuing the matter as a possible homicide or kidnapping since late November, and the discovery of Dylan Redwine's body has cemented the case as a murder investigation. Investigators have not divulged what led them to conclude so quickly that the Redwine disappearance was a murder or kidnapping.
Dylan Redwine disappeared during a court-ordered visit with his father during Thanksgiving. He arrived at Durango-La Plata County Airport on Nov. 18, 2012. Mark Redwine claimed that he left Dylan the next day to go and run some errands, and when he came home the boy was gone. Mark Redwine contacted the Bayfield Marshal's Office on the day of Dylan's disappearance to ask if anyone had seen his son, then called Dylan's mother, Elaine Redwine, to ask if she had heard from Dylan. Elaine contacted the La Plata County Sheriff's Office at about 5:30 p.m. that day to report that Dylan was missing from his father's Vallecito home.
Dylan Redwine's parents have publicly accused each other of involvement in their son's disappearance. Mark Redwine told 7NEWS that he had always suspected his ex-wife "had some involvement with this," but had no way to prove it. In 2005, Elaine Redwine requested a temporary restraining order against Mark. She claimed that he posed a "credible threat" that the life and health of their sons Dylan and Cory were in imminent danger.

Mark Redwine said he has tried to reach out to Elaine regarding a truce for the sake of paying Dylan to rest. "This morning, I messaged her asking her to keep in mind that Dylan deserves a proper memorial and at some point we have to discuss and come to an agreement about where he's going to be laid to rest." He added that the conversation did not go well.
Dylan Redwine's older brother Cory believes their father knows more than he is letting on. "I believe Mark is, Mark is holding the key," Cory said. "We strongly believe that the last person to see Dylan knows the truth."
Dylan's mom Elaine sent a heartbreaking statement to 7NEWS regarding the discovery of her son's remains.
"While we have found him, we still don't know what happened to him and are determined to find out," her statement said. "While we continue to honor our sweet boy, Dylan, our next mission is to get justice for Dylan."
