Find out what is going to happen during the Season 3 Finale of Game of Thrones here!

What is the Red Wedding and why does it occur?

The Red Wedding is a massacre that occurs in Season 3, Episode 9 "The Rains of Castamere."

After the War of the Five Kings, the Freys rise in a rebellion against the Iron Throne on behalf of the King in the North, securing a relationship between the Freys and the Starks. In the alliance, Robb is sworn to marry Lord Walder Frey's daughter -- but the eldest Stark breaks that promise when he marries Jeyne Westerling. After Lord Walder Frey hears of Robb's betrayal, he begins to discuss how to bring House Frey back as an Iron Throne supporter with Tywin Lannister.

The manipulative Lannister develops a plan to lure Robb to the Twins with an invitation to Lord Walder Frey's daughter's wedding, supposedly to forgive the King of the North for breaking the promise. Robb and his men celebrate the commencement of Roslin Frey and Edmure Tully, and the King even sends off the newly wedded couple to consummate their marriage. That's when Jeyne tells Robb she is pregnant with a boy and wishes to name their son after the late King Ned Stark. "Don't you want to teach little Ned Stark how to ride a horse?" Jeyne teases Robb. Their hopeful day dreaming is soon tarnished when Lord Walder Frey reveals the truth of why he invited Robb to the wedding.

Wasn't Robb Stark suspicious of why he was invited to the wedding?

This is a valid question. Why would Robb enter the Twins knowing he had broken a pact with Lord Walder Frey? That is because before the ceremony commenced, everyone participated in the ancient and sacred tradition of the guest right. The guest right goes back thousands of years in Westeros to age of the First Men, and is a scared law of hospitality. Bread and salt is traditionally broken which means that neither the host nor his guest can harm each other during the length of the guest's stay. If the guest right was broken, the wrath of the Gods both old and new are said to condemn those who broke the sacred covenant. It was reported that Lord Walder Frey was leery of going against the Gods, but Lannister had promised to protect his family, which eased his mind.

How did Catelyn And Robb Stark die during the Red Wedding?

Rob is killed by Roose Bolton with a knife to the heart after being shot with arrows. Lady Catelyn Tully watches her eldest son die after first begging then threatening Lord Walder Frey with a knife to his young wife's throat. Catelyn swears on her family's name that she will cut the head off of Frey's wife if he doesn't let Robb go. Once Robb dies, Catelyn slits the girl's throat before having her own neck cut.

Robb's head is then cut off and placed on his direwolf, Grey Wind's, body as mockery. The wolf's head is also place on Robb's body. Catelyn is thrown naked into a river as ridicule to House Tully funeral traditions.
