Johnny Depp is officially dating Amber Heard, proven by pictures that surfaced of the couple holding hands at a Rolling Stones concert, which confirmed that Depp's attempts at winning over his Rum Diary costar were well-received.
Depp, wearing a newsboy cap as a subtle disguise, and Heard wearing a chic red jacket, were spotted hand-in-hand at the secret concert in L.A. on Saturday, fueling speculation that the two are back together and publicly dating.
Depp and Heard met while filming The Rum Diary where a source reports that the on-screen lovers couldn't contain their off-camera canoodling. "They definitely had chemistry that carried over from the set," the source told Radar Online, despite the fact that both were in separate relationships.
Depp was involved with long-time partner Vanessa Paradis at the time, and after a 14-year-relationship that gave them two kids, the couple split in June following Depp's Rum Diary role and subsequent rumors that he was romantically linked with Heard.
Following the announcement of the breakup, Paradis seemed at ease with the decision to call it quits. "Love is the strongest and most fragile thing we have in life. Nothing is ever for sure, but when something in love doesn't work from the beginning, it's never going to work. Don't push it," the French actress said.
Although Paradis seemed to accept that her relationship with Depp had come to an end, Heard was reluctant to publicly date the Pirates of the Caribbean star for fear of negative publicity.
"Johnny and Amber began dating pretty soon after he split with Vanessa," a source close to Depp told Radar. "At first, Amber was a little apprehensive, because she didn't want to be seen as the mistress. But Johnny won her over with his generosity and he was constantly giving her gifts."
The source went on to explain that, "On a weekly basis, Johnny would send her fresh flowers wherever she was. He also bought her tons of custom-designed jewelry that would cost him up tens of thousands of dollars." In addition to blossoms and baubles, Depp apparently had a replica of the Rum Diary bar made for his co-star.
"He had a bar built on his Bahamas property to look exactly like the one in The Rum Diary. The set designer created the plans. They are so in love," a source told US Weekly.
According to reports, Depp and Heard dated under the radar for some time before the Rolling Stones concert pictures leaked, avoiding the paparazzi by spending time in low-key locales.
"They were spending a significant amount of time together in San Diego in the fall and also at his home in the Bahamas, so they wouldn't have to deal with paparazzi and could keep their relationship for under wraps as long as possible," the source told Radar.
Despite the couple's attempts to keep their dating a secret, Depp and Heard ultimately let their love take hold. "He made Amber feel giddy by showing how much he felt for her and, in the end, she slowly fell in love with him."
