Melissa Gilbert's wedding was a lavish, albeit unconventional affair, where the bride wore a red dress instead of traditional white to say "I do" to Timothy Busfield at the historic San Ysidro Ranch in California during Wednesday's wedding ceremony.
Opting for a scarlet red dress, Melissa Gilbert posted a Twitter picture of her and her groom, 55, who went with a classic dark suit and a flower pinned to his lapel. Gilbert, 48, chose a strapless tiered gown, which complimented her fiery red hair that was softly curled and swept to the side. The Dancing With the Stars alum carried a bouquet of multicolored flowers, wrapped in a white sash, with a star fish that poked through.
Gilbert's nontraditional wedding dress may have been chosen since it wasn't the bride's first marriage, nor was it for Busfield. The couple, who got engaged over the holidays, have both been married twice before and now have a combined family of five, with three children for him and two for her.
Gilbert was previously married to Bruce Boxleitner for nearly 16 years before finalizing their divorce in 2011, while Busfield enjoyed an almost 20-year marriage with Jennifer Merwin.
Perhaps Gilbert and Busfield, known for his role in Thirtysomething, chose the Montecito locale to tie the knot due to the venue's famous history. The historic location has hosted Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman's rehearsal dinner, Hilary Duff and Mike Comrie's wedding night and John and Jackie Kennedy's honeymoon.
Gilbert joins fellow Hollywood celebrities like Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Biel, who chose to stray away from a classic white gown in favor of a colored variety. Biel wore a pink printed dress when she married Justin Timberlake at an Italian destination wedding, and Witherspoon chose a blush gown for her California ceremony with husband Jim Toth.
Gilbert and Busfield's engagement news came as a surprise, as many were unaware that the two were even dating at the time, but according to sources the couple share a long history. "They've known each other for quite some time, as their paths have crossed off-and-on over the past 20 years," the source told US Weekly.
In an accompanying message to the gorgeous wedding photo that Gilbert shared, the Little House on The Prairie star wrote, "Thanks for all the well wishes. Heres a photo. Taken with my iPhone!!"
