The hoax, which was started by 4chan internet trolls featured a fake video claiming that Justin Bieber had been diagnosed with cancer and asking true fans (Beliebers) to shave their heads in support, under the banner hashtag #BaldforBieber.
The Bieber cancer prank began early last week on Oct. 22 when a falsified screenshot of Entertainment Tonight tweeting out the story appeared online, claiming that the "Baby" singer had been diagnosed with cancer.
"Pop Star Justin Bieber was diagnosed with cancer earlier this morning. Bieber fans are shaving their heads to show their support," read the fake Twitter post.
The internet trolls also created tribute videos, Facebook support pages and even BaldforBieber.com to build credibility for the Bieber cancer hoax. The website originally featured a photo gallery of Beliebers with shaved heads, which has now been replaced with a message celebrating the successful prank.
Fortunately, for Bieber's fans, the cancer hoax was short lived. On Friday, a user on Reddit revealed the source of the prank.
Reddit user ErroneousDylan claimed to be part of the Bieber cancer hoax, writing:
I was there when we started this...Somebody made a few Twitter accounts, we edited Wikipedia, we spammed chat rooms, and we even posted here on Reddit (but it was deleted for lack of evidence). Somebody made a few fake news posts too which were convincing but without a link it wasn't strong enough.
Only a few "true" Beliebers fell for the Bieber cancer prank before it was debunked. Check out videos of the bald Beliebers below and photos above.
