What happened to Gmail? Is it down? When will it go back online? (Photo: Google)

Is Gmail down right now? According to this message I received when trying to login in to my Google Mail account, yes! The service went down today, Friday, January 24, 2014 sometime between 1 and 2 p.m. ET and continues to remain down according to www.downrightnow.com. Based on what is showing up on social media sites like Twitter and Facebook, the outage is pretty widespread.

UPDATE 2:37 p.m. ET: I was just able to log into my Gmail account. Based on Twitter comments, Gmail and other Google services like Google+ Hangouts and GChat appear to be returning to some users.

Here is the message displayed when trying to log in to Gmail.

What Happened To Gmail? Google's Email Service Not Working For Free And Paid Accounts

It is unknown at this time what exactly happened with Gmail to cause it to go offline. It could be some routine maintenance or update, but the times Gmail has been offline are few and far between. It seems however whatever has happened has caused all accounts to go offline —not just free accounts, but paid company accounts as well. While no one can say what is happening, I'm sure in the back of everyone's mind is the question, "Has Google been hacked?"

The worst part of Gmail being down, however, is how to get ones work done while Google mail is not working! As a telecommuter, Gmail is pretty vital to my daily workflow. The services Google provides Gmail, Gchat and its social networking service are important for many other kinds of workers in government and businesses of all kinds.

What Services Are Affected By Gmail Outage?

Gmail down reports are coming from all parts of the world including Europe, the U.S., Canada, India and more. While the App Status dashboard appears to be working currently, the real problem is unclear. In addition to Gmail, Google+ is also down as well as the ability to submit comments to YouTube or read some of them. Hangouts also appears to be down along with Gmail for users on POP or IMAP protocols.

When Will Gmail Be Fixed or Back Online?

Whenever we find out what exactly has happened to Gmail to take it offline, and why it has gone down we'll be sure to bring an update. Until that time, Facebook, Twitter and Skype may be our best forms of communication until Gmail goes back online.
