Untattended litter box, dumpster, airport terminal, wet dog and diaper - these are Google's disgusting way of wishing you a happy April Fool's Day as the Google "Nose" prank is giving people across the globe something to laugh about (Scroll down for YouTube video)
Probably one of the best and most believable, April Fool's Day pranks ever, Google "announced" this weekend in a ground-breaking YouTube video that its search engine was getting an exciting new feature -- Google Nose BETA. With Google Nose BETA users can experience just what "garlic breath" "cabernet" an "airport terminal" or "waffles" smell like through Google's "Aromabase."
So not that 've ever wanted to smell a dumpster, or bask in the potent fumes of an unattended litter box, but I have to hand it to the Google team, they were pretty ingenious with this unexpected April Fool's Day surprise. I mean some of the selections were pretty darn inspired, including the ability to sniff "fear" or find out what the smell of "success" is really like. It's too bad really Google didn't find a way to bring us this olfactory delight, (personally I'd love to wake up and sniff the "waffles" every morning) but instead just found a clever way make our April Fool's day more fun.
So, haven't seen Google's April Fool's Day Nose yet? Well then I'm sorry to spoil the surprise. Here's the scoop on it.
With the Google Nose experience, the company promises "to offer the sharpest olfactory experience available" in a search engine. We are introduced to the latest addition on to the Google search engine by staff at the Mountain View, Calif. location where the team explains how users can search the "Aromabase" for scents boasting an impressive, 15 million "scentibytes" online. According to the April Fool's Day commercial, Google's "mobile aroma indexing program" uses "photons with infrasound waves" and "temporarily aligns molecules to emulate a particular scent."
I'm not sure about you, but this one actually had me going. Yes, I will raise my hand and admit that I got sucked in to the joke, allowing myself to "move as close to the screen as possible" just like the instructions told me I should. Though I didn't attempt to smell the dumpster, unattended litter box, airport terminal, wet dog, or garlic breath, I did attempt to smell the campfire and peppermint...several times before reading the "Need Help" section. It was there I discovered, after trying a more updated browser, that perhaps my problem was that it was April Fool's day.
Yep Google Nose, you got me, and though it certainly would have been grand to smell freshly baked waffles, or cringe at the smell of the dumpster, it was even more fun to direct my friends to the hoax and watch them experience the same joy amazement, frustration and then laugh that I did. Overall, it got my April Fool's Day off to a secentabulous start. Thanks Google. Can't wait to see what you have in store for us next year that could trump the unattended litter box.
